Abergavenny blues band

Mid Loaf Crisis was formed by a bunch of like-minded lovers of “proper” music from the blues to country rock via folk, Americana, singer/songwriters and the original meaning of R&B of the sixties and seventies.

Classic stuff. Not totally surprising as our average age is, well, classic too.

The band members are all blow ins from across the border who have fallen in love with the area. But as we all live close-ish to the Sugar Loaf mountain, it gave rise to our name!

The setup consists of David on rhythm guitar, vocals and percussion; Simon on ukulele, harp and vocals; George on a steel resonator guitar or an acoustic guitar plus vocals; Martin on electric guitar and vocals; and Stephen on electric bass. We all join in with harmonies aiming to get a good depth to each number.

Our music is an eclectic but very listenable mix of classic numbers. We also write and perform some of our own compositions. We practice individually but meet every week to work on our songs together.

Basically, we play and sing for the enjoyment it brings, and we love bringing that joy to others.

Some of our songs are bluesy but other songs are more upbeat. Anyway, none last much more than four minutes so if you’re less keen on one song, the next one might be up your street.

The only way to find out of course is to give us a try!

The band members

george2

George sings and plays a steel resonator with a slide and also an acoustic guitar (not at the same time). He was a creative director in various London ad agencies before moving to Wales in 2014 and Wild Horses (one of the band's favourite songs) would not drag him back there. He still works a bit doing design work – such as this website.

David sings, plays acoustic guitar and cajon. He ran a successful marketing and design consultancy in London but sold up for a more outdoors lifestyle in the Black Mountains where he runs, paraglides and occasionally rides horses around the hills. He’s also an artist and a member of the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team.

simon

Simon sings and plays the ukulele and harp (harmonica). He is trying to retire as a defence barrister, but in the meantime can often be found in his local wood nursing it back to good health, whilst making charcoal and other useful things out of trees.

Martin also sings and plays lead on his various electric guitars. He is a well established movie business director and film editor. His love of blues goes way back and he brings another dimension to the band with his playing. He also launches himself off local hills by paraglider in his spare time.

steve

Steve completes the line up playing a steady bass line that keeps us all together. He is another ex-Londoner with 15 years in film production, working on movies such as Batman and Full Metal Jacket as an assistant director. He lives in Abergavenny and his day job now is as a paraglider instructor.

Set list

Our set is a lively mix of classic blues and country rock (think along the lines of the Rolling Stones with a twist of BB King, Little Feat, Eric Clapton and a dash of Johnny Cash). It’s all entertainingly sung and played and we do some nice harmonies along the way.

We’re still working on some new videos but to get an idea here’s a short compilation from some recent events.
